Our Story
In 1956, Geoffrey Brown, who had previously spent his time delivering garments door to door in his hometown of Camperdown, started his clothing business at 159 Melbourne Road, North Geelong. Brown lived in this same building with his wife and five sons, and it still stands today. Business was good, but there was limited space. As the customers grew, so did the need for more stock and a larger premise.
Brown purchased and moved the business to 167 Pakington Street, West Geelong in 1966. The opportunity to launch Brown’s Drapery Centre was also realised in Pakington Street. In addition to the clothing business, Brown dealt in general merchandise. The Drapery Centre became a staple icon of the Pakington Street experience.
Once again, as the demand increased, so did the need for even more space. And so the search for a new home ensued
In 1982, the bare allotment of land that is now 158-164 Pakington Street was purchased. The G.N Brown & Son’s building was built and is where the business of Mr Brown’s Menswear still operates today.
